EFFECT OF DIFFERENT EXTERNAL K+/Na+ AND Ca2+/Na+ RATIOS ON GROWTH, IONIC COMPOSITION AND SELECTIVITY OF RICE LINES VARYING IN SALT TOLERANCE

چکیده
Two separate experiments in solution culture were conducted simultaneously under saline conditions with varying external K:Na ratios. Shoot and root yield, their composition and selectivity of Kover Na under all set of conditions were calculated for NIAB-6 (salt tolerant) and IR 1561 (salt sensitive). Salinity decreased shoot and root yield drastically but different ratios of K:Na and Ca:Na did not affect these yields in both cultivars. Concentration of K and Ca in tissues increased with their increasing levels in the external solutions. Salinity though reduced K:Na level in shoot and root yet salt tolerant line (NIAB-6) maintained better selectivity (S K+' Na +; under saline conditions. The role of Ca in the improvement of K selectivity (8K+. Na +) under saline environment has been discussed.

Effect of Salinity on Germination, Growth, Yield, Ionic Balance and Solute Composition of Pigeon Pea (cajanus Cajan (l.) Millsp)
Salt tolerance of Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp) was determined at three growth stages since it has already been observed by a number of workers that degree of salt tolerance of different crops varies with their ontogeny. Therefore, salt tolerance of three accessions, Local Arhar, ICPL-151 and ICPL-850014 of pigeon pea was assessed at germination, seedling and adult stage. It is clearly...

The effects on the potential difference across isolated frog skin (R. catesbeiana, R. pipiens) of changing the ionic composition of the bathing solutions have been examined. Estimates of mean values and precision are presented for the potential changes produced by substituting other alkali metal cations for Na at the outside border and for K at the inside border. In terms of ability to mimic Na...
متن کاملEvaluation of salt-tolerant forages for sequential water reuse systems II. Plant–ion relations
Implementation of the saline drainage water reuse system proposed for the westside of the San Joaquin Valley (SJV) of California requires development of sustainable cropping systems, which incorporate useful, salt-tolerant agronomic species. Ion composition in the saline drainage effluents present in the SJV is unique, with Na, SO4 2 , Cl , Mg and Ca predominating in that order. To identify pot...
متن کاملWhether “Slip-Mode Conductance” Occurs
Excitable cells rely on selective ionic conductances for electrical signaling. The work of Hodgkin and Huxley (1) propelled the modern dissection of the mechanisms of selectivity. Their formulation postulated two independent sets of ionic conductances, Na and K, whose relative permeabilities changed during the course of excitation. Mullins subsequently proposed that Na and K traverse the membra...
متن کاملSodium-Calcium Exchange with Anion Exclusion and Weathering Corrections
In order to accurately model soil reclamation with concentrated electrolytes such as CaCl2 or sea water, it must be determined if there is an effect of salinity on the Na-Ca exchange selectivity. A new procedure for determining Na-Ca selectivity in calcareous and gypsiferous soils was used to study the effects of ionic strength and mineralogy on Na-Ca exchange. Four specimen clay minerals and t...
